YOU CAN WIN A 2006 SEDONA |
||
| The 2006 Northern Ontario Kia Cup is
nearly here. This is the inaugural year that Kia Motors has signed on as the
major sponsor for the championship. This is also the year that Northern
Ontario joins the majority of the other provinces and holds it's
championship in an arena.
The Nipigon Curling Club has taken the bull by the horns to attempt this project, with a small club it is a major undertaking. With co-operation from every angle in this small community they are confident they will put on a show never before seen at the Northerns, some are dubbing it a mini-Brier. Lack of arena play is what a number of participants in past Northern Ontario championships have claimed as a disadvantage heading to the Brier. But with veteran ice maker, Lloyd Stansell and his crew putting in his usual world class ice, this year's winner can not use that as an excuse. To give the week long event more of a Brier feeling, the large multi-purpose rooms will be transformed into the Kia Aiyee Lounge. This will be beneficial for those who want to practice up for the Brier Patch. The Kia Aiyee Lounge will feature a number of large screen televisions that will broadcast digital cable (courtesy of Shaw Cable) as well as two featured games from the ice surface. It will also host a giant silent auction that will be on going during the week. Hours for the Kia Aiyee Lounge will be 1:00pm to 12:00 midnight all week long. Lloyd’s Lounge in the Nipigon Curling Club is only a short walk from the community centre. Follow the KIA Trail to the curling club where you can mingle with friends and the competitors. Sporting events will be shown on our several televisions, music will be playing, and we’ll have prize give aways too. Hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. With there being three teams from the Port Arthur Curling Club a daily bus service from PACC (and possibly FWCC) is being organized. Details for the bus schedule has not been finalized. If you are interested in this service please contact PACC (or FWCC) for more information or to reserve a seat. The price for the round trip bus service is $15. PACC and FWCC are also selling tickets for the event.
The price for attending the event is very cheap, $35 (full event pass) compared to $160 in Southern Ontario. The organizing committee is attempting to create a great atmosphere and the only way to do that is with lots of people. That is why they are trying to make it very convenient for the fans attending.

Nipigon Arena almost ready to go (click here to see more transition pictures) The week's events will start with the opening ceremonies on Monday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. and will feature traditional pipes and drums leading the competitors onto the ice. Come on out and see who the Honourary Nipigon KIA Cup Team members are, and hear the sweet melodies of a certain singing ice maker. There will be other activities during the week and one is The Investor’s Group Draw to the Button. All you have to do is buy a ballot during the week, and you could be drawing to the button during the 5th end break of the championship game for a new 2006 Kia Sedona van. Two ballots will be drawn each day of the event, and those individuals will have a chance to draw to the pin and win a 2006 Kia Sedona van. Oh yeah, did I fail to mention that there just may be some very fine curling action to watch as well. Tickets for the event:Weekly pass $35.00
